I've never heard of you either
Friday, July 04 2008 03:08 pm Eastern Standard Time2006-07-29If you are curious about how changes in principal affect the length of a loan, click on the loan calculator link in the navbar and download a spreadsheet I built a couple years ago. I've found it fun to play with, and useful to evaluate whether paying extra on a loan is worthwhile for you. Try it, you'll like it.
2006-02-19The guest book didn't last long. The spam it attracted was unacceptable, so I disabled the ability to post. If I find one that can block the bots, I'll update to it, but for now we'll do without. I'd love to take the buttheads that came up with this stuff and give them to the idiots protesting over some stupid cartoons. That would make a good bit for "reality tv", don't you think?
2006-02-01Recently added - There's now a guestbook and a poll you can participate in. Also, Belva (my sister-in-law) wrote a story about her father that can be found on the articles page. Check it out!
2005-11-13What in hell is a 'Clown Sack'?
To find out, go to
Clown Sack. I'm sure everyone at the Satisfied Frog was asking the same question after they made their first public appearance recently. I'm still trying to figure it out myself.
2005-09-18The RIAA is still at it, ruining lives to try and frighten people into abandoning file-sharing. Many more lawsuits (over 10,000 now) and no end in sight. They weep their crocodile tears and lament the plight of the artists that are being 'stolen' from. What about all the years the record companies were the pirates? It's no secret that the major recording labels stole the rights to many artists' works (excuse me, they were
'given' the rights). The musicians and artists agreed to this theft because it was the only way they saw to get the music out there. That and the promise of big payoffs that may or may not have occurred.
If you really want to hit the RIAA where it hurts, stop buying cds and videos. But that would be too hard on those that feel their life is incomplete unless they have the newest release of ________ __________ (fill in the blank).
JUST SAY NO!!!!
2005-09-15In case you missed the announcement, Firefox is at version 1.07 right now. If you are using an earlier version, you really should upgrade. Your computer will thank you for it.
2005-01-23I found out recently that it's no exaggeration that SUV-style vehicles are easy to roll. I was heading to work last Wednesday and hit a slick spot on the road. When I hit the ice-crusted snowbank that was all she wrote. I flipped it even though I wasn't going more than 35 mph. Damn things are dangerous.....
2004-12-29You should visit the
Mozilla website and get the latest releases to protect against recently discovered security vulnerabilities. Current versions are:Firefox - 1.0, Thunderbird - 1.0, Mozilla - 1.75.
I thought I would share a somewhat unique photo I took a few weeks ago. I was at the local gun club sighting in a new scope on my rifle and just happened to have my new Minolta DiMage A2 along. Here's what I saw:

There was a great deal of discussion about how unusual it was for a bullet to set a target on fire. Most everyone agreed they had not seen anything like it before. That's my favorite kind of picture to take...the odd or unusual. Unfortunately, I'd had the camera for one day and was still trying to figure it out, so it's a bit out of focus. Oh, well. In spite of that, it's a neat picture.
2004-11-20Gallery is back! Due to the recent move to a new server, I was forced to rework the photo album section of the site. I had tried
Gallery at one point in the past and really liked it, but issues with permissions pushed me to roll my own solution. It's a new day (so to speak), so I thought I'd try it again. If you're looking for a way to publish pictures on the web give
Gallery a look. It's the cat's meow.
2004-11-13If you can read this that means the move to a new hosting service has taken place and things are working. Due to a difference in the way IXWebhosting formats a connection string to the MySQL server (it's simpler, actually) I had a few days of downtime. I hope you weren't too disappointed.
2004-09-19Don't forget to pop over to the Mozilla website and download the latest version of Firefox, Thunderbird, or Mozilla. Several security issues were recently discovered due to the bounty being offered for verified security flaws. Imagine that, updates being offered proactively instead of after-the-fact. What a novel concept! Current versions are:Firefox - 1.0PR, Thunderbird - 0.8, Mozilla - 1.73. Downloads of the browser have surpassed the Mozilla groups' expectations, with over 1,000,000 downloads after four days. Be one of the people Bill Gates is worried about. Go get yours now!
2004-08-22Head over to the "Articles" section of the site to check out the latest offering on keeping your computer secure. You'll find advice and recommendations for configuration changes, tools and utilities, and in general, why you need to become familiar with this aspect of owning a internet-connected PC. The issues discussed are the things I've found to be most important in order to practice "Safe Computing".
2004-08-15One of the Firefox extensions that I've found especially helpful is the Web Developer extension. Once installed, it adds a toolbar with functions that can help you improve your web sites by easily validating CSS and HTML, displaying block-level sections, image properties, and numerous other functions. It's really is the best thing since sliced bread.
2004-08-14A just-released update for Mozilla Firefox (version 0.9.3) resolves four recently-discovered security issues. There has also been an update released for Thunderbird, the companion e-mail client. The version just released is 0.7.3
2004-08-10For those of you out there that have made the switch to Mozilla Firefox, you'll find some excellent browser extensions at the Firefox extensions page. From silly to superb, the packages available for download will allow you to customize your browser in ways that Microsoft could never offer with IE. One more disadvantage of imbedding the browser in the operating system.
2004-08-09If you're interested in an alternative to Microsoft's Outlook Express mail client, you need to check out Thunderbird, released by the Mozilla group. The junk-mail filter can learn to identify spam, you can import your address book, separately manage multiple accounts, etc, etc, etc. Once I switched, Outlook Express became just one more bad memory. Try it, you'll like it.
2004-08-06There's lots of noise these days about copy-protection of music cds. BMG is claiming that there will be no more unprotected cds available in the near future. The way to fight it is very simple...don't buy them.
2004-08-01If you haven't tried Mozilla Firefox yet, you're missing out on a safer, more convenient internet experience. Wired News is reporting that Mozilla downloads have surged following advice from the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) to avoid Internet Explorer for security reasons. Firefox 0.9.3 is the latest release, and features faster browsing and better standards compliance. You can download it from the Mozilla web site.
